Abstract: A prospective, randomized, longitudinal, interventional study in a University Research Center involved a 10-week AE program in 32 women without DM and a body mass index (BMI) greater than 27?kg/m2. (Cases n?=?17; Controls n?=?15). The primary objective was to evaluate the influence of a controlled AE program on beta-oxidation according to modifications in short, medium, and long-chain ACs. Secondary objectives were to define the behavior of amino acids, and the correlation between these modifications with metabolic and anthropometric markers. The proportion of dropouts was 17% and 6% in controls and cases, respectively. In cases there was a significant reduction in total carnitine (30.40 [95% CI 28.2 to 35.6]) vs. (29.4 [CI 95% 25.1 to 31.7]) p?=?0.0008 and long-chain AC?C14 (0.06 [95% CI 0.05 to 0.08]) vs. (0.05 [95% CI 0.05 to 0.09]) p?=?0.005 and in C18 (0.31 [95% CI 0.27 to 0.45]) vs. (0.28 [95% CI 0.22 to 0.32]) p?=?0.03. Free fatty acid levels remained without change during the study in both groups. In conclusion, a controlled 10-week AE program improved beta-oxidation by reducing long-chain ACs. This finding highlights the importance that AE might have in avoiding or reverting lipotoxicity, and in consequence, improving insulin sensitivity and pancreatic beta cell functional reserve.

Open Journal of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases (OJEMD) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojemd.2018.83011
Abstract: Background: Nonagenarians are uncommon in our population. The study aim was to profile physical mobility, declared health problems, hypertension and diabetes frequency, awareness, treated and good control in urban low-income elders. Method: The study had cross-sectional design in population sample. Subjects were urban men and women older than 59 years at the medium low income stratum at a developing country. Survey was carried out from October 2008 to October 2009. All elder dwellers in randomly selected houses were surveyed; clinical exam after consent. Good Control: Systolic/Diastolic <135/<85 mmHg, and HbA1c < 7% for diabetes. Results: There were 162 elders, 53 (32.7%) were male, 99 (61.1%) were younger than 70 years. Forty nine (30.2%) had impaired mobility; among them 20 (55.6%) were bed or home restricted, and 29 (44.4%) needed help to go out. Unstable health condition was found in 36 (22.2%), with significantly more men 19 (52.8%) vs 34 (27.0%), X2 = 8.5, df1, P < 0.005; and impaired mobility 32 (88.9%) vs 17 (13.5%), P < 0.001; but similar age 69.2 ± 7.7 vs 68.3 ± 7.3, t = 0.62, df 160, P > 0.05. The frequency, proportions for: known diagnosis, on treatment, and good control were 75 (69.4%), 55 (73.3%), 45 (60.0%) and 12 of 45 (26.7%) for hypertension; 53 (49.1%), 47 (88.7%), 42 (79.2%) and 9 of 42 (21.4%) for diabetes. The most frequent unstable conditions were cardiovascular. Conclusions: Data suggest unstable health no association with the oldest old. The small proportion in good control of Diabetes and/or hypertension could explain the large frequency of elders with unstable health and prevention of reaching nonagenarian age.
A hybrid double-dot in silicon

Physics , 2011, DOI: 10.1088/1367-2630/14/2/023050
Abstract: We report electrical measurements of a single arsenic dopant atom in the tunnel-barrier of a silicon SET. As well as performing electrical characterization of the individual dopant, we study series electrical transport through the dopant and SET. We measure the triple points of this hybrid double dot, using simulations to support our results, and show that we can tune the electrostatic coupling between the two sub-systems.
GIS as a Decision Support Tool in the Area of Influence of the Nuclear Complex Angra dos Reis, Brazil  [PDF]

Journal of Geographic Information System (JGIS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jgis.2013.51002
Abstract:

The outlook concerning the occurrence of industrial accidents has led to the implementation of response systems based on geoprocessing tools, which are widely adopted in emergency for such ventures, since they have helped and served as a support for decision making, as well as for the preparation of guidelines aimed at managing emergencies. Nuclear power plants, because they constitute types of industrial activities that present dangerous conditions and attention regarding security are characterized as hazardous, especially due to consequences that occurred from large accidents— such as Chernobyl (1986) and Fukushima (2011)—highlighting the importance to its negative impacts, since the occurrence of accidents at nuclear power plants may affect surrounding areas, thus exposing a set of elements that are part of the environmental dynamics that integrates the catchment area where this type of plant is situated. In this way, through an integrated view of the region where the nuclear complex is located in Angra dos Reis City (Rio de Janeiro State) and, also, by aggregating information that portray the geobiophysical reality of its surroundings, several elements were incorporated into a database developed in a virtual environment, in which was produced a geographic information system (GIS) that presents a complex of variables that, once considered, can enhance various analysis in order to support emergency situations and planning, as well as guidelines that help define actions from the occurrence of accidental events at the nuclear plant.

Constraint Functional Logic Programming over Finite Domains
Antonio J. Fernandez,Teresa Hortala-Gonzalez,Fernando Saenz-Perez,Rafael del Vado-Virseda
Computer Science , 2006,
Abstract: In this paper, we present our proposal to Constraint Functional Logic Programming over Finite Domains (CFLP(FD)) with a lazy functional logic programming language which seamlessly embodies finite domain (FD) constraints. This proposal increases the expressiveness and power of constraint logic programming over finite domains (CLP(FD)) by combining functional and relational notation, curried expressions, higher-order functions, patterns, partial applications, non-determinism, lazy evaluation, logical variables, types, domain variables, constraint composition, and finite domain constraints. We describe the syntax of the language, its type discipline, and its declarative and operational semantics. We also describe TOY(FD), an implementation for CFLPFD(FD), and a comparison of our approach with respect to CLP(FD) from a programming point of view, showing the new features we introduce. And, finally, we show a performance analysis which demonstrates that our implementation is competitive with respect to existing CLP(FD) systems and that clearly outperforms the closer approach to CFLP(FD).
Scientific Prediction in the Beginning of the “Historical Turn”: Stephen Toulmin and Thomas Kuhn  [PDF]
Wenceslao J. Gonzalez
Open Journal of Philosophy (OJPP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojpp.2013.32053
Abstract:

This paper considers the similarities and differences between Toulmin and Kuhn on the problem of prediction. The context of the analysis is the beginning of the “historical turn” in philosophy of science (i.e., the period before the 1965 international colloquium held at Bedford College). The comparison between these authors takes into account several levels: semantic, logical, epistemological, methodological, ontological, and axiological. The main goal is to analyze whether there are influences of Toulmin in Kuhn regarding scientific prediction or, at least, if the former reached similar positions to the latter on the issue of the role of prediction in science.

Gest?o & Produ??o , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-530X1997000200008
Abstract: the objective of this paper is to present the results of research developed to determine the quality of physical distribution services offered by the grocery industry as perceived by retailers and wholesalers. a methodology was developed in order to measure the service quality, which was applied at two different moments: soon after the implementation, in 1994, of the brazilian economic plan called the "plano real", and at the end of 1995. the results show great changes in the market behavior over the time interval between the two phases of the research. the results also show customer service as a purchasing variable that is increasing in importance. retailers and wholesalers are raising their service requirements as suppliers are decreasing their service quality level. as a result, the percentage of unsatisfied client firms substantially increased from june 1994 to december 1995.
